After our blog post for BERA, I am delighted to now share the longer article version with you.
In the blog post, we reflect on comics as a teaching tool, using Emina’s story as an example. We argue that comics equip students with visual literacy skills in education, and (maybe more importantly) with critical thinking skills in life, connecting learning with real life.
In the article, we reflect on how this educational potential of comics as well as our understanding of forced marriage informed our project and the comic. We also share our findings from the trial sessions with two schools that led us to conclude that the comic is an effective tool to teach teenagers about forced marriage and to equip them to raise awareness and act as allies to those at risk or already experiencing it.
